How do I pass a Sound Test?

Performance in builds varies for many reasons. Assuming correct designs and material selection, the most common factor influencing performance is poor workmanship. Detailing is critical to maximising on site performance, especially in floor isolation and appropriate party wall construction.

Soundguard Acoustics recommend that you appoint our expert acoustic consultants at the start of your project to review the designs, and then also to carry out on site inspections during the build process to check specifically for any workmanship issues that could cause problems when it comes to sound testing. Soundguard Acoustics can provide routine review of basic plans to complex computer modelled partition designs to predict the completed performance.

This is a relatively inexpensive option that can avoid sound testing failures which result in expensive remedial treatment and delay in your project.

What do I do if the test fails?

In line with the regulations you are required to carry out remedial works to ensure the development meets the relevant performance requirements and re-test. If you don't know what to do by way of remedial works then Soundguard Acoustics can advise you. You may also be asked by Building Control to test further examples of the construction elsewhere on the development in order to restore confidence and/or highlight the extent of the problem.

What are Robust Details?

From the 1^st July 2004, and for new house and flat developments, Robust Details may be used to eliminate the need for end of build pre-completion testing. Robust Details are high performance constructions that are capable of providing consistently good sound insulation but do require that the design is registered with, and approved by, Robust Details Ltd (RDL) and that confirmation of the construction, through on-site visual inspection by RDL has been completed in accordance with the registered design.

The specific details in the RDL handbook must be followed explicitly and each plot formally 'registered' with RDL before building commences. Robust Details registration cannot be used in conversions and so pre-completion testing must be undertaken in these circumstances. 

As the specific details in the Robust Details scheme may not allow for flexibility in the design of a development or may not prove cost effective, pre-completion testing may still prove a more suitable and effective route to demonstrate compliance.

Garage noise can be peaceful

This month Soundguard Acoustics Ltd has been involved with two garage planning applications. General vehicle maintenance and body work repair is associated with noise and residents may understandably raise concern when these businesses relocate nearby. In both instances a BS4142 assessment was undertaken to establish the likely noise impact. Where a noise impact was possible then noise control techniques were applied and included an extraction exhaust silencer for a paint booth and additional internal wall and roof treatments for the building. A sound solution that satisfied planning, the local residents and the expanding businesses.

Noise control in an animal feed mill

Harpers Home Mix is located in Holsworthy, Devon. They requested that South West Noise Consultants Soundguard Acoustics Ltd assisted them in meeting their Control of Noise at Work obligations for their staff. The Company had already created a good noise control policy and had made some initial noise measurements. The professional input of Soundguard Acoustics Ltd assisted them in completeing their Noise at Work Risk Assessment, identifying noise sources and providing an action plan of noise control.

Holiday Retreat Centre sounds just right

The Abbey is home to a Christian Community and hosts conference facilities, provides retreat and a holiday centre. Renovations to the main dining hall are planned to expose the original features of this marvelous building but revbereration and noise control was a worry. Sending Residents Barking Mad!

Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was contracted by residents that were unfortunately subjected to continuous Kennel Noise following the inappropriate conversion of neighbouing farm buildings into a Commercial Kennel venture. The noise was seriously affecting their enjoyment of their property and gardens and Soundguard Acoustics Ltd proved this to be the case. Despite the Kennel Owners having their own independent noise assessment we proved that complaints were likely. The Local Authority planning commitee determined that a nuisance existed and a 17 vote to 1 support was given to our report and for the removal of the Kennels. Needless to say that our client was delighted!

Controlling the noise of the Armada

Armada Tube & Steel (South West) Ltd are based in Launceston, Cornwall. The company cuts and processes steel tube supplies for sports equipment and furniture. Greenfield Engineering gets the Green Light

Greenfield Engineering are based in Holsworthy, Devon. They selected Soundguard Acoustics to undertake their Noise at Work Risk assessments for both of their main manufacturing areas. Greenfield produce a range of metal framework for office furniture and the cutting, maufacturing and paint spraying processes were all reisk assessed. The result, a sensible on site solution that was both economical, enforceable and would protect the future hearing health of their workforce.

Baker v Quantum Clothing - Hearing Damage in Industry

This appeal concerned the liability of the appellant employers in the knitting industry of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire for hearing loss suffered by employees prior to 1 January 1990. The central issue was whether liability existed at common law in negligence and/or under the Factories Act 1961, s 29(1) towards an employee who suffered noise-induced hearing loss due to exposure to noise levels between 85 and 90dB(A)lepd.

The Supreme Court allowed the appeal by a majority of 3:2 and restores the judge’s decision at first instance. The court found that the 1972 Code of Practice published by the Department of Employment, which recommended a noise exposure limit of 90dB(A)lepd, constituted an acceptable standard for average employers to adhere to during the 1970s and 1980s. The Court also endorsed a further two year period beyond 1988 allowed by the judge for implementing protective measures, thus meaning that the average employer had no common law liability before 1 January 1990. Additionally, the Factories Act 1961, s 29 did not impose a more stringent liability than at common law. The employers by complying with the Code of Practice were not in breach of the statutory duty before like dates as those from which they were potentially liable at common law. [article]

Barking about Noise Control

South West Acoustic Consultants Soundguard Acoustics were involved with the introduction of an innovative Parasol Kennel design at a new Animal Rescue Centre in Devon. As the site was in the planning stages then noise measurement at a similar location in Plymouth, Devon was used to collate data that could be used in the planning report. The design of Parasol kennels helps to reduce the barking noise of dogs by restricting their field of view, by introducing sound absorbing material into the design and avoiding long lines of barking dogs as typical of a linear barrack style kennel. Planning & noise experts Soundguard Acoustics continues to work with the developer, planners and the kennel designer to determine the best noise control solutions for the project.

A ray of Sunlight in Noise Risk Assessment

Soundguard Acoustics Consultants, Devon were asked to repeat Workplace Noise Risk Assesssments for both the Honiton, Devon and the Newton Abbot, Devon sites of Sunlight Ltd. Sunlight are industrial laundry services for the hotel and healthcare markets and requested that our Acoustic Consultants return to repeat, review and evaluate their Control of Noise at Work Risk assessments (CONAWR).

The finer art of sound assessment

Acoustic consultancy is often carried out in heavy industry, at exhaust outlets, in damp fields, during night-time hours on development grounds and building sites. So when South West Acoustic Consultancy Soundguard Acoustics was asked for sound assessment advice at Exeter Rougemont Castle we jumped at the chance. Named Rougemont, after the reddish volcanic rocks on which it stands, the imposing building has changed considerablely since it was built by William the Conquerer in 1068. The castle was seized by Henry III in 1232, visited by Richard III in 1413 and ceased to be a military fortress in 1646. Much of the original building is now absent. What remains is the original structure of the Devon County Court from 1774 and the Castle has now past into private hands and is being renovated for accomodation and events. Devon Acoustic Consultancy Soundguard Acoustics was tasked with providing assessment and noise control advice for the function rooms and accomodation at the Castle.

Noise assessment - it's just nuts!

Parnell Lang, Copplestone Exeter requested the assistance of South West acoustic consultants Soundguard Acoustics to update their Noise at Work Risk Assessments. Parnell Lang is an agricultural mill that mixes bird seed products, machinery consists of mixing silos, conveyors, seed cleaners and packing equipment. Soundguard Acoustics, Bideford, Devon undertook work at the site just over two years ago and the Action Plan of noise control has since been introduced. The Exeter based firm has reduced noise exposure across the site and Soundguard Acoustics was able to assist in assigning revised hearing protection zones and further noise control advice.

Flying High with All Nippon Airways

All Nippon Airways, Japan's second largest airline invited the Devon acoustic consultancy Soundguard Acoustics to undertake a noise at work risk exposure analysis at London, Heathrow. The risk assessment included like daily noise dose for baggage handlers, jet bridge operators and airside staff. Soundguard Acoustics provided a full report which detailed an action plan of control to ensure that ANA continued to meet it's Noise at Work responsibilities.

Little Harbour Childrens Hospice

Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was contracted by Barnstaple based Architects, David Wilson Partnership, to assist in partition and ceiling design at Little Harbour Chidrens Hospice. Soundguard Acoustics is based in Devon, South West. The Tranquility of Chichester Homes

Barnstaple based developers Chichester Homes selected local Devon based acoustic consultancy Soundguard Acoustics Ltd to assist in planning noise control for a development in Barnstaple, North Devon. The 15 home development is adajacent to a commercial development site and Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was asked to review existing PPG24 enviromental planning reports and suggested improvments to the existing window design to ensure that the future residents were not subjected to unreasonable noise levels. Making a noise about Recycling

North Devon Council requested the services of Devon acoustic consultants Soundguard Acoustics to undertake workplace noise risk assessments at their Brynsworthy Park Environmental Centre. The 7.5m recycling hub is based near Barnstaple, Devon and opened in June 2010. The centre recycles plastics, cans, glass textiles and cardboard as well as offering an education and visitors centre. The delivery and loading operations along with the processing operations were risk assessed and a robust plac of noise control and hearing protection zones were designed to minimise employee noise exposure.

Noise Power!

Langage Power Station, Plymouth, Devon is the latest large power station to be built in the United Kingdom. More may follow in order to fill the projected 'energy gap' in UK generating capacity, caused by the expected closure of nuclear and older coal-fired stations. The power station's two gas-powered turbines became operational in 2009. Although extensive environmental noise risk monitoring and control became part of the planning process, now that the plant is operational the level of noise risk for its employees can now be determined.

'Relyon' us for noise assessment

After recent training sessions with Relyon the company invited Noise at Work Risk Assessors Soundguard Acoustics Ltd back to noise risk assess both their Okehampton and Wellington fabrication sites. The mattress fabrication processes require the use of stitchers, quilters, trimmers and a range of hand operated tooling. Soundguard Acoustics Ltd Devon based noise consultants assessed the level of noise exposure risk using both Dosimetry and Sound Level Meter techniques and developed a comprehensive noise control action plan for the company.

Taking the 'Heatric' out of noise control

Heatric is located in Poole, Dorset. The company manufactures highly compact printed circuit diffusion-bonded heat exchangers for chemical, nuclear, oil and gas applications. A noise risk assessment was requested to manage noise level exposure & to achieve CONAWR. South West based Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was asked to repeat the noise risk assessments undertaken at this site due to significant differences in layout, machinery and management. Suprema Concepts Ltd fabricate healthcare furniture and use a variety of laser cutting, routing, edge banding and trimming operations. Devon noise consultants Soundguard Acoustics Ltd updated their noise at work risk assessments, provided further noise control advice and helped Suprema Concepts Ltd in their continued noise risk assessment & control.

Strimming & Cutting out the Noise

Devon based noise at work specialists Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was asked to assess the daily noise risk to the horticultural machinery operators at South Hams District Council. Soundguard Acoustics Ltd noise consultants assessed all the Strimmers, Grass Cutters, Agricultural Machinery, Chainsaws & Chippers at operator positions & provided a report that assisted South Hams District Council in understanding & managing the noise risk to their employees.

Listening to the Thames

Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was asked to undertake control of noise at work hearing screening assessments for all employees at Thames Plastic Bottles Ltd in Maidenhead. The South West based acoustic consultancy Soundguard Acoustics Ltd provided a flexible package that ensured that all daytime, afternoon and night shift workers had their hearing tested and ensured that Thames Plastic Bottles Ltd continued to maintain their responsibility to their employees under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations.

Gaymer Cider - noise risk assessment

Somerset based cider makers Gaymer Cider Company Ltd invited Noise at Work assessment experts Soundguard Acoustics Ltd to undertake noise risk assessments across it's vast cider making plant. The facility, which is based in Shepton Mallet, operates with around 250 staff, and is capable of producing over 200 million litres of cider a year.

The site encompasses 4 main bottling lines, tank storage, pressing operations, engineering and distribution. Gaymer Cider Company has already put in place an effective noise control regime and Noise control experts Soundguard Acoustics Ltd were asked to assess the level of risk and offer further advice for noise control. Devon noise consultants, Soundguard Acoustics Ltd, will continue to work with Gaymer Cider Company through their busy season in October when high levels of fruit pressing operations occur.

Safety and comfort with Relyon beds

Devon noise consultants Soundguard Acoustics Ltd spent much of the day instructing the Health and Safety team at Relyon, Somerset how to undertake some basic practical noise risk assessment measurements so that they could identify noise areas of their assembly and identify the needs for further more comprehensive testing. Torpedo launch sound testing

Devon based marine engineering firm J+S Ltd requested that South West Noise Consultants Soundguard Acoustics Ltd determine the level of noise risk to employees during their Magazine Torpedo Launch System testing. The torpedos are launched and fired along an internal track within the test bay using compressed air producing peak noise levels as high as 144dBC.

After a noise report of the torpedo system within the development bay was completed the Ministry of Defence requested the test to be repeated on board HMS Northumberland a type 23 Frigate. Sound Level Meters were set up to capture the firing of the torpedo within the weapons room and crew were fitted with DoseBadges and stood at their specific locations to determine their exposure.

It was recognised that in factory and training environments the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 do apply and appropriate control by compressor noise reduction, hearing protection, demarked zones and clear signs was determined to be the most effective approach in reducing the noise exposure of staff and crew. CONAWR training at Alberto Culver

Targeting gunfire at 'The Tunnel'

The Tunnel is an ambitious project located just outside of Charmouth, Dorset. A disused road tunnel has been converted for use as an indoor shooting range and is due to open in the Spring 2010. The facility hopes to be of value to the 2012 olympics as well as local ballistics testing, the police and shooting enthusisats. Fully qualified staff will welcome all groups to come and participate and demonstrate that Shooting really can provide enormous enjoyment when practised within a controlled enviroment with qualified professionals.

Devon Acoustic consultancy Soundguard Acoustics Ltd were required to deliver expert acoustic advice to ensure that local properties would not be affected by noise break out from the site. With the support of the developers and the local police force a Magnum was used as a noise source from which a BS4142 survey was constructed. Additional internal and external acoustic advice was provided to ensure that the design of the build would meet the requirements of the project whilst avoiding any disturbance to local residents. Flybe is Europe's largest independent regional airline carrier and was named 'Regional Airline of the Year 2009'. The company operate throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe. Devon noise consultants Soundguard Acoustics Ltd were invited to undertake noise at work risk assessments for Flybe's groundcrew including their repair and refurbishment operations at the Exeter, Manchester and Birmingham sites. The company is based in Swansea and employees over 130 people within the manufacturing, blending and dispensing operations. Noise at Work experts Soundguard Acoustics Ltd were invited to undertake workplace noise assessments to CONAWR regulations throughout the site and across the numerous production lines. A range of noise control solutions was determined as well as alteration to the existing mandatory hearing protection zones. New homes satisfy noise planning

Soundguard Acoustics Ltd was asked to assess a 14 home development site in Bideford, Devon for Inox Group to PPG24 standards so that planning conditions for noise could be determined. With some small alterations to layout and upgrading of the windows in some facades using BS8233 a solution was obtained that satisfied the planning conditions for the site.

Keeping the peace at ‘The Sanctuary’

A BS4142 assessment was requested by BlueSky Apartments, Swindon as fan noise was impacting upon parts of ‘The Sanctuary’ a group of high specification apartments in a modern building. The survey was completed by Soundguard Acoustics Ltd and the problem quickly determined as inappropriately externally mounted fan isolation that was creating a vibration pathway and noise transmission into the building.

Brewing solutions with Clipper teas

Clipper Teas, Beaminster, Dorset required Soundguard Acoustics Ltd to undertake a BS4142 environmental assessment due to a proposed factory extension. Soundguard Acoustics Ltd provided advice on external construction, loading operations and the internal layout of machinery and determined that the noise levels resulting from a factory extension and operations would not impact upon neighbouring properties.
